Science SARU Adapts Ghost in the Shell Manga
Science SARU, a studio known for its distinctive, experimental animation style, has taken on the globally recognized "Ghost in the Shell" franchise. Co-founded in 2013 by Masaaki Yuasa and Eunyoung Choi, the studio has previously produced acclaimed works such as "Devilman Crybaby" and "The Night Is Short, Walk On Girl," establishing a reputation for bold artistic choices that diverge from conventional industry aesthetics.
The new "Ghost in the Shell" TV anime adaptation, which premiered worldwide, marks a significant tonal shift from previous iterations like Mamoru Oshii's 1995 film and "Stand Alone Complex." Instead of adhering to the stoic tone of its predecessors, this series aims for a vibrant and direct adaptation. It channels the precise spirit, comedic undertones, and high-kinetic pacing characteristic of Masamune Shirow's original 1989 manga.
The project is helmed by director Mokochan, with producers Kengo Abe from Bandai Namco and Kohei Sakita from Science SARU. Acclaimed sci-fi author EnJoe Toh is responsible for character design. The anime also features notable collaborations, including a metallic title logo designed by Hajime Sorayama, and music contributions from King Gnu for the opening theme song and MILLENNIUM PARADE.
