Sanfic Industria and Guadalajara Film Fest Launch Queer Incubator

Sanfic Industria and the Guadalajara Film Festival have established a new joint incubator initiative aimed at fostering and supporting Latin American queer cinema. This collaboration seeks to provide a dedicated platform for LGBTQ+ filmmakers in the region, building on the recent successes of Latin American queer films on the international stage. The initiative was announced following the significant achievements of Mexican director David Pablos' film “On the Road” (“En el camino”), which garnered both the Venice Film Festival’s Queer Lion and Horizons awards in the previous year. This recognition highlights a growing momentum and increased visibility for queer narratives originating from Latin America. The Teddy Award at the Berlinale has also previously honored Latino LGBTQ+ films, with notable examples including Peru's “Retablo.”

The incubator program will select up to six projects from across Latin America, offering participants a structured development process. The initiative is designed to provide essential resources and mentorship to help these projects advance from their early stages to completion. The program will span several months, commencing with a residency in Santiago, Chile, hosted by Sanfic Industria. This initial phase will focus on script development and project refinement, allowing filmmakers to immerse themselves in a creative environment. Following the Santiago residency, participants will engage in a virtual development period, continuing their work remotely with ongoing support.

The second phase of the incubator will take place in Guadalajara, Mexico, during the Guadalajara International Film Festival (FICG). This segment will focus on the business and market aspects of filmmaking, including pitching sessions and networking opportunities with industry professionals. The goal is to connect filmmakers with potential producers, distributors, and financiers, thereby increasing the chances of their films reaching a wider audience. The collaboration between Sanfic Industria, a key industry event in Chile, and the Guadalajara Film Festival, one of Latin America's most prestigious film events, signifies a strong commitment to the region's LGBTQ+ cinematic talent.

This partnership aims to address the specific challenges faced by queer filmmakers in Latin America, including limited access to funding and distribution channels. By creating a supportive ecosystem, the incubator intends to nurture diverse voices and stories within the queer community, ensuring their representation and impact in the global film landscape.
