Samsung Galaxy SmartTag 3 Adds iPhone Compatibility

Samsung announced its third-generation Bluetooth tracker, the Galaxy SmartTag 3, on January 10, 2024, introducing a more compact design and enhanced battery performance. This iteration integrates several new tracking and software functionalities, notably enabling cross-operating system support. This feature is specifically designed to facilitate easier sharing of tracking information among friends and family, regardless of their device's operating system. The SmartTag 3 adopts a distinctive squircle shape, a departure from previous designs, and incorporates a built-in speaker for audible alerts.

The device leverages Samsung's SmartThings Find network, which utilizes a vast array of Galaxy devices to help locate lost items. The new model boasts an improved range compared to its predecessors, allowing users to find their tagged belongings from further distances. A key upgrade is the introduction of a USB-C charging port, replacing the previous coin-cell battery system. This change is expected to simplify charging and potentially extend the device's operational lifespan between charges. Crucially, the Galaxy SmartTag 3 introduces compatibility with Apple's Find My network, a significant move for Samsung. This allows iPhone users to track the SmartTag 3 using their own devices, mirroring the functionality previously exclusive to Android users via the SmartThings Find app. This cross-platform integration aims to broaden the appeal and utility of the SmartTag, making it a more versatile option for a wider consumer base. The device also features an enhanced UWB (Ultra-Wideband) chip, enabling more precise location finding when a user is in close proximity to the tag. This precision finding feature guides users with visual and haptic feedback directly to their misplaced item.

Samsung has positioned the Galaxy SmartTag 3 as a direct competitor to Apple's AirTag, offering a compelling alternative for users invested in either the Android or iOS ecosystems. The company has not yet released pricing details or a specific launch date for the Galaxy SmartTag 3, but it is anticipated to be available in the coming months. The previous generation, the Galaxy SmartTag 2, was released in October 2023 and featured a similar squircle design with an IP67 rating for dust and water resistance, and a replaceable CR2032 battery. The SmartTag 3 builds upon these features with its enhanced connectivity and charging method.
