Samsung Unveils Galaxy Z Fold8 and Fold8 Ultra Foldables

Samsung officially launched its latest foldable smartphones, the Galaxy Z Fold8 and Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, this week. The new models aim to solidify Samsung's position in the foldable market with several key upgrades. Both devices feature a 7.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X main display with a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate, promising smoother visuals and improved power efficiency. The exterior display on the Fold8 measures 6.2 inches, while the Fold8 Ultra boasts a slightly larger 6.3-inch cover screen, both also supporting 120Hz refresh rates.

Durability has been a focal point for the new Fold8 series. Samsung has incorporated a new hinge mechanism designed for increased longevity, and both the main and cover screens are protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Armor. The frame is constructed from Armor Aluminum, and the devices are rated IPX8 for water resistance, allowing submersion up to 1.5 meters for 30 minutes. This focus on robust materials aims to address common concerns about the durability of foldable phones.

Under the hood, the Galaxy Z Fold8 and Fold8 Ultra are powered by the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy chipset, ensuring high performance for demanding applications and multitasking. The Fold8 comes with 12GB of RAM, while the Fold8 Ultra offers configurations with up to 16GB of RAM. Storage options range from 256GB to 1TB. The camera systems have also seen improvements, with the Fold8 featuring a 50MP main sensor, a 12MP ultrawide lens, and a 10MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom. The Fold8 Ultra sports a similar setup but with a 50MP main sensor and an enhanced 10MP telephoto lens offering 5x optical zoom.

Samsung has also emphasized software enhancements for the foldable experience. The new devices run on Android 14 with Samsung's One UI 6.1.1 overlay, which includes features optimized for the foldable form factor, such as improved multitasking capabilities and app continuity between the cover and main displays. The battery capacity for both models is 4400 mAh, supporting 25W wired charging and 15W wireless charging. Pricing and availability details indicate that the Galaxy Z Fold8 starts at $1,799, and the Fold8 Ultra begins at $1,999, with pre-orders opening on July 10, 2024, and general availability expected on July 24, 2024.
