Russian strikes kill 11 and set historic cathedral in Kyiv ablaze

Russian airstrikes killed at least 11 people and set the historic Church of the Transfiguration in Kyiv ablaze on July 23, 2023. The strikes also damaged residential buildings and infrastructure across the capital city. Ukrainian officials reported that air defense systems intercepted some of the incoming missiles and drones, but not all. The attack occurred during the night, with explosions heard in multiple districts of Kyiv. The Church of the Transfiguration, a UNESCO World Heritage site, sustained significant damage, with its roof reportedly collapsing. In a separate incident on the same day, a Ukrainian drone attack in the Russian city of Tula, south of Moscow, killed three people and injured several others. The drone was reportedly targeting a military facility.
