Russia Strikes Odesa, Killing Three; Ukraine Targets Moscow

Russia launched an attack on the southern Ukrainian city of Odesa, resulting in the deaths of three people. This strike followed an overnight Ukrainian drone assault on Moscow, which reportedly involved approximately 400 drones. The attacks are part of a broader escalation of hostilities impacting vital grain export routes.

Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, under the instructions of Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, is notifying the International Maritime Organization and international partners about Russia's recent attacks on civilian shipping. The ministry also stated that governments of nations whose citizens were killed or injured are being informed. Ukraine's Foreign Minister, Dmytro Kuleba, previously discussed the issue with IMO leadership during President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's visit to London, advocating for an international monitoring mission to Ukraine's ports.

This mission is expected to commence operations in the fall, aiming to document Russian maritime aggression and facilitate accountability. The renewed violence on the Black Sea route has raised concerns about global grain supply. Ukraine, a significant exporter of wheat and corn, has reportedly lost about a third of its Black Sea port export capacity due to Russian missile and drone attacks, according to traders and analysts. The conflict's impact on these crucial supply chains remains a significant international concern.
