Russia Integrates Military Training Into School Curriculum

Russian schools are implementing a significant overhaul of their civics curriculum, mandating military training for teenagers as young as 13. Beginning next week, students returning to school will find that "Fundamentals of Security and Defense of the Motherland" classes will dedicate half of their weekly instruction to basic military preparedness. This expanded training moves beyond previous limited modules, escalating the scope and intensity of instruction for a new generation. The revamped curriculum, ordered by the Education Ministry, includes hands-on learning about various armaments such as machine guns, anti-tank weapons, and hand grenades. Students will also receive instruction in emergency field medicine, general military discipline, and survival techniques relevant to conflict zones. The curriculum further encompasses lessons on Russia's national security doctrine, the structure of its armed forces, and the identification and handling of mines and explosive hazards. It also covers first aid for combat injuries, protocols for chemical and radiation exposure, and managing acute stress. This initiative is framed by the Kremlin as a necessary step to prepare youth for future defense needs, occurring as Russia's conflict in Ukraine enters its fifth year. Critics, such as exiled Russian teacher Pavel Talankin, who co-directed the Oscar-winning documentary "Mr. Nobody Against Putin," argue that this represents a "creeping militarization" of schools. Talankin stated that the "romanticization of war and violence, combined with a constant fear of external enemies, instills in young people the idea that human life holds no value and that dying for the regime and the president is normal." He further commented that the training aims to foster a mindset where individuals are prepared to "die for the motherland, taking up the flag and marching into the line of fire without asking questions." The educational overhaul is designed to create a direct pipeline of potential recruits from classrooms to the military, supported by the deployment of battlefield veterans from the war in Ukraine to assist in instruction. This comprehensive integration of military education into the standard school day signifies a strategic effort by the Russian government to shape the attitudes and skills of its youth towards national defense and military service.
