Romania Shoots Down Russian Drone Over Black Sea

Romania's F-16 fighter jets intercepted and shot down a suspected Russian drone over the Black Sea on Sunday, marking the fourth instance of a drone violating NATO airspace in recent weeks. The interception occurred at 10:13 AM local time over Romania's territorial waters in the Sulina-Chilia area, according to Romanian President Nicusor Dan. Two F-16 jets, operating under NATO's command, were scrambled from the Fetești airbase to engage the drone. Authorities have identified one of the previously intercepted drones as a "Shahed type," a model commonly used by the Russian Federation in its ongoing conflict with Ukraine. This incident underscores a pattern of airspace incursions by Russian aerial vehicles into NATO territory. Colonel Martin O'Donnell, a spokesperson for NATO's Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE), confirmed that this was the fourth recent downing of a drone violating NATO airspace by Romania in coordination with the alliance. He also noted that prior to these three interceptions, Romanian jets had shot down a drone over Estonia in May. Romanian pilots and aircraft are currently stationed in Lithuania as part of NATO's force posture, providing broad strike capabilities across the region. Colonel O'Donnell emphasized NATO's constant vigilance and readiness to defend itself against any threats. In response to the increasing drone activity, Romania has bolstered its defenses by acquiring the MEROPS counter-drone system. This system utilizes small, three-feet long drones to neutralize incoming threats such as Shahed drones and their variants. The deployment of such systems is part of a broader initiative to strengthen NATO's eastern flank against aerial threats. The heightened tensions are further illustrated by a previous incident in May, where a Russian drone, part of an attack targeting Ukraine, strayed into Romanian airspace and struck an apartment building in eastern Romania. That event resulted in injuries to two people and raised concerns about the potential spillover of the conflict into NATO member states. The repeated violations of Romanian airspace are deemed "inadmissible and intolerable" by Romanian officials, highlighting the ongoing security challenges posed by the conflict in neighboring Ukraine.
