RioFilme Sets Shanghai Festival Mission: Partnerships, Content, Growth

RioFilme, the state-owned film agency of Rio de Janeiro, will present three films at the 28th Shanghai International Film Festival, aiming to foster partnerships and expand content distribution. The festival, scheduled to run from June 14 to June 23, 2024, marks a significant step for Brazilian cinema in the Asian market. Among the selected films is "Luiza's Desert" (O Deserto de Luiza), directed by Daniel Ribeiro, which explores themes of identity and belonging. "The Other Shore" (A Outra Margem), directed by Juliana Rojas and Marco Dutra, is a supernatural drama set in a remote village. The third film, "King of the Jungle" (O Rei da Selva), by director João Paulo Miranda Maria, is a drama about a rural worker seeking a better life in the city. RioFilme's participation includes a delegation of producers and directors who will engage in business meetings and networking events with Chinese industry professionals. The agency's objective is to secure distribution deals for these films and explore co-production opportunities, building on the historical success of Brazilian telenovelas like "The Slave Isaura" in China, which garnered over 300 million viewers in 1976. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to promote Brazilian audiovisual content internationally and strengthen cultural ties.
