Richard Alston, trailblazer and guiding light of British dance, dies aged 77

Sir Richard Alston, a towering figure in British contemporary dance, has died at the age of 77. His passing was announced on Monday by the Richard Alston Foundation, established in 2021 to champion contemporary dance and safeguard his artistic legacy. The foundation released a statement confirming his peaceful death at home on September 7, following a period of illness, during which he received exceptional care at the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead and the devoted support of his friends. Alston was celebrated globally for his distinctive choreographic style, characterized by its lucidity, emotional depth, and a masterful fusion of grace and intellectual rigor. Throughout his illustrious career, Alston held significant leadership roles within the British dance landscape. During his tenure at The Place, he was instrumental in developing and presenting new work, notably creating more than 50 pieces for the Richard Alston Dance Company, which he founded and directed.
