Southwest Launches Reverse Red-Eye From Las Vegas to Honolulu

Southwest Airlines announced a new "reverse red-eye" flight option on its Las Vegas to Honolulu route, set to begin in March. This itinerary represents a significant shift for the carrier, which had no red-eye flights just a year and a half ago. The Dallas-based airline also revealed 15 new routes, expanding service to Austin, Nashville, San Diego, and the Caribbean.

The "reverse red-eye" is an unusual westbound overnight flight where passengers depart a city late at night and arrive at their destination early the next morning, effectively time-zone hopping backward. Typically, red-eye flights travel eastbound, utilizing the time difference to allow for overnight travel and morning arrival. This new Southwest flight will depart Las Vegas' Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) at 2:45 a.m. PDT and, after a 6-hour and 25-minute flight, land at Honolulu's Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) at 6:10 a.m. Hawaiian Standard Time.

Passengers on this route will likely need to arrive at the Las Vegas airport between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m. local time for the pre-dawn departure. The early morning arrival in Honolulu means travelers will reach their destination at the very start of the day, potentially before hotel check-in is available. This schedule is designed to maximize time spent at the destination for those who can manage the overnight travel and minimal sleep, or who can sleep effectively on the aircraft.
