Range Rover Debuts First Electric SUV With $138,000 Price

Range Rover has officially unveiled its first-ever fully electric model, the Range Rover Electric, marking a significant milestone for the luxury automotive brand. This new electric SUV is built upon a flexible architecture that was engineered from its inception to accommodate electrification, alongside the marque's existing combustion and hybrid powertrain options. The manufacturing of this pioneering vehicle takes place at the Solihull plant, a facility that has been producing Range Rovers since 1970. The Range Rover Electric is powered by twin permanent-magnet motors, each rated at 260kW, which collectively deliver up to 542 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque. These performance figures are positioned by the brand as being on par with its V8 engine outputs. This powertrain enables the SUV to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in as little as 4.3 seconds and achieve a 50-75 mph overtaking speed in approximately 2.7 seconds. The energy for these motors is supplied by a usable 118.5kWh double-stacked battery, comprised of 344 prismatic cells. This battery system operates on an 800-volt architecture, which facilitates rapid charging capabilities, including split-charging. The estimated EPA range for the Range Rover Electric is up to 333 miles. Recharging the battery from 10% to 80% is projected to take around 22 minutes when connected to a rapid DC charger, with the potential to add approximately 125 miles of range in just 10 minutes at its peak charging rate. A key focus for the Range Rover Electric is maintaining the brand's renowned capability, particularly in areas where an electric flagship might typically compromise. Adhering to a principle of "Range Rover first, Electric second," the exterior silhouette remains largely unchanged, with EV-specific modifications limited to an aerodynamically optimized grille, redesigned wheels, and a tailored underbody. New control systems and an Integrated Traction Management system are implemented to enhance performance and handling. The vehicle is also designed to retain significant off-road prowess, including the ability to wade through up to 35 inches of water and ascend 45-degree slopes. Order books for the Range Rover Electric are now open, with a starting price of $138,000 USD. This launch positions Range Rover to compete more directly in the growing luxury electric SUV market, appealing to consumers who seek both electrification and the established luxury and capability associated with the Range Rover nameplate.
