Qatar Mourns Father Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani

Qatar is observing a period of mourning for its Father Emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, who passed away on Sunday, November 3, 2024. The announcement was made by the Amiri Diwan, the royal court, which also declared three days of official mourning. During his rule from 1995 to 2013, Sheikh Hamad oversaw a significant transformation of Qatar, steering it from a modest pearling and oil-dependent economy to a global player in energy, media, and finance.

Sheikh Hamad's reign was marked by ambitious developmental projects and a strategic foreign policy. He is credited with establishing Al Jazeera Media Network in 1996, which rapidly became a prominent global news broadcaster. His leadership also saw substantial investments in education and healthcare, including the founding of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development in 1995. This foundation spearheaded the creation of numerous educational institutions and research centers, attracting international universities to establish campuses in Doha.

Under his stewardship, Qatar leveraged its vast natural gas reserves to fuel economic growth and enhance its international standing. The nation's sovereign wealth fund, the Qatar Investment Authority, was established in 2005 to manage and grow the country's assets through strategic global investments. Sheikh Hamad also played a key role in mediating regional conflicts and fostering diplomatic ties, positioning Qatar as an influential mediator in the Middle East.

His son, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, succeeded him as Emir in 2013, continuing many of his father's policies. The legacy of Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani is deeply intertwined with Qatar's rise as a modern nation and a significant force on the international stage.
