Publix Frozen Blueberry Recall Reaches FDA's Highest Risk Level

Publix Super Markets has upgraded its voluntary recall of frozen blueberries to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) highest risk classification, Class I. This designation signifies a "health hazard or a situation where there is a reasonable probability that the use of, or exposure to, a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death." The expanded recall now encompasses all sizes and all best-by dates of the affected frozen blueberry products sold at Publix stores across Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. The initial recall, initiated on February 28, 2024, was prompted by a notification from the supplier, Almark Foods, regarding potential contamination of a blueberry ingredient. Almark Foods had previously issued a recall for its frozen blueberries due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterium that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, elderly people, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Healthy individuals may suffer short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. Pregnant women may experience mild flu-like symptoms, but the infection can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, premature delivery, or life-threatening infection of the newborn.
