Rep. Beatty Seeks Court Order to Block Trump Name Return

Representative Joyce Beatty initiated an emergency legal action on Thursday, seeking a federal court injunction to halt the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts from re-inscribing President Donald Trump's name on its facade. The Trump-aligned board of the Kennedy Center had voted earlier in the month to add the inscription "The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Restored and Renovated By President Donald J. Trump." Furthermore, the board's resolution stipulated that if the Trump Kennedy Center Fund successfully raised $100 million, an additional inscription would be added, stating "Endowed by the Trump Kennedy Center Fund." The plaza area in front of the Kennedy Center was also slated for renaming to honor Trump. The Kennedy Center has stated that it will not proceed with engraving Trump's name before September 8, allowing time for legal proceedings and arguments to develop. Representative Beatty, a Democrat from Ohio and an ex officio member of the Kennedy Center's board, has been leading the effort to prevent the memorialization of Donald Trump at the venue. Her legal team, comprising Norm Eisen and Nathaniel Zelinsky, argued in their court filing that the board's recent actions constitute "clear violations" of a prior court order. A representative for the Kennedy Center did not immediately provide a comment when reached for a statement. The resolution approved by board members supportive of Trump asserted that the Kennedy Center would face "financial ruin without President Trump's unique stature as both an unparalleled fundraiser and world-class developer." The performing arts center was originally designated by Congress in 1964 as a living memorial to President John F. Kennedy, following his assassination the previous year. The founding legislation explicitly prohibits the board of trustees from transforming the center into a memorial for any other individual or from affixing another person's name to the building's exterior. In May, U.S. District Court Judge Christopher Cooper ruled that the Kennedy Center had unlawfully added Trump's name to the building and ordered its removal. The institution's leadership complied with this order in June, though a tarp and scaffolding were left in place where the name had been. Lawyers representing the Kennedy Center have not yet commented on the latest legal challenge.
