Sony to Sell Only Digital PlayStation Games in 2028

Sony announced it will cease selling physical editions of PlayStation games in the United States starting January 2028, exclusively offering digital versions through retailers and the PlayStation Store. This move signifies a continued industry shift towards digital distribution, with over 25% of PlayStation 5 consoles sold in the US since launch being digital-only models, an increase from 18% in October 2024. Sid Shuman, senior director of Sony Interactive Entertainment Content Communications, described the transition as a "natural direction" driven by evolving consumer preferences for direct downloads over physical purchases.

While digital downloads offer convenience and speed, this transition raises significant concerns regarding consumer ownership and control over purchased content. Unlike physical games, which can be resold, lent, or kept indefinitely, digital titles are subject to the terms and conditions of digital storefronts. This means games can be removed from sale, or access to previously purchased content can be revoked due to licensing changes or other agreements.

This concern is not theoretical, as Sony has already begun removing digital content from users' libraries. Beginning in September, users will lose access to 551 previously purchased StudioCanal films and TV shows due to licensing agreements. This list includes titles such as "Apocalypse Now: The Final Cut," "Paddington," and "Terminator 2." Sony stated the content will be removed from users' video libraries as a result of these licensing issues, highlighting the precarious nature of digital ownership when tied to evolving licensing terms that consumers may not have fully understood or negotiated at the time of purchase.
