Ryuichi Sakamoto Photo Exhibition Opens at SAI

An exhibition titled "PHOTO RYUICHI SAKAMOTO" is currently being held at SAI in Jingumae, Tokyo, from Saturday, October 17th, to Sunday, November 8th. This exhibition features a collection of photographs captured by the renowned Japanese musician Ryuichi Sakamoto during the 1980s. Sakamoto, who was actively engaged in his music career during this decade, also pursued photography, observing the world through his camera lens. The displayed works encompass landscapes, portraits of people encountered during his travels, and scenes from his daily life, offering a glimpse into his personal perspective.

Sponsored by Polaroid, a company with headquarters in the Netherlands, the exhibition includes a special presentation of the actual Polaroid equipment that Ryuichi Sakamoto utilized. This section aims to highlight the appeal of Polaroid as a photographic medium that was widely embraced by numerous artists and photographers throughout the 1970s and 1980s. The exhibition not only focuses on Sakamoto's photographic output but also delves into the broader significance of Polaroid as an artistic tool during that era.

In conjunction with the exhibition, a series of related events are scheduled to take place. On Saturday, October 17th, a talk show will feature critic Atsushi Sasaki and editor Shigeo Goto. Subsequently, on Sunday, November 1st, artist Michihiro Shimabuku and Shigeo Goto will participate in another talk show. Both of these events are open to the public on a first-come, first-served basis, with a capacity limit of 40 attendees each. The participation fee for these talk shows is ¥2,000, inclusive of tax. Additionally, a Polaroid workshop is scheduled to be held on Saturday, October 24th, providing an interactive experience for visitors interested in the medium.

To coincide with the exhibition, a photo book titled "PHOTO RYUICHI SAKAMOTO" will be available for pre-sale at the venue. This special edition is presented in two volumes, "Polaroid" and "Snapshot," and compiles the photographs taken by Ryuichi Sakamoto in the 1980s. The two volumes are housed together in a distinctive special case. The price for this comprehensive photo book is ¥9,680, including tax. The exhibition venue is located at RAYARD MIYASHITA PARK South 3F, 6-20-10 Jingumae, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo, and is open daily from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM throughout its run. Admission to the exhibition itself is free of charge.
