PG&E Expands V2X Program With Tesla, Volvo, Nissan

Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) has significantly expanded its Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) program, a pioneering initiative that enables electric vehicles (EVs) to provide backup power to homes. The utility announced the expansion on May 15, 2024, incorporating new automotive manufacturers into the program, including Tesla, Kia, Volvo, Polestar, and Nissan. This expansion broadens the range of compatible EVs available to customers looking to leverage their vehicles as a reliable source of home energy storage and backup power during outages.

The V2X program allows EV owners to connect their vehicles to their homes, effectively turning their cars into mobile power generators. This functionality is particularly valuable in regions prone to power disruptions, such as California, where PG&E operates. The program aims to enhance grid resilience and provide customers with greater energy independence. As part of the expanded offering, PG&E is providing substantial financial incentives, with drivers now eligible to receive as much as $17,000. These incentives are designed to offset the costs associated with the necessary charging and bidirectional power transfer equipment, making the adoption of V2X technology more accessible to a wider customer base.

To facilitate the implementation of this technology, PG&E has also onboarded new approved partners: Bidirectional Energy and PowerFlex. These companies will play a crucial role in providing the necessary hardware, installation services, and potentially software integration to enable the V2X functionality. Their involvement is expected to streamline the process for customers, ensuring seamless integration of their EVs into their home energy systems. The program's enrollment period has been extended, with drivers now having until June 30, 2027, to sign up and take advantage of the available incentives and technology. This extended deadline provides ample opportunity for interested customers to research, select compatible vehicles, and install the required equipment.
