Pete Byrne, the lead vocalist and co-founder of the British new wave band Naked Eyes, died in Los Angeles on September 14, 2024, at the age of 74, following a brief illness. Byrne established Naked Eyes in 1982 alongside his college friend Rob Fisher. The duo quickly rose to prominence within the burgeoning new wave and synth-pop scene of the early 1980s.

Their debut album, "Burning Bridges," released in 1983, garnered significant commercial attention, peaking at No. 32 on the prestigious Billboard 200 chart in the United States. However, it was their cover version of "Always Something There to Remind Me" that propelled Naked Eyes to international stardom. Originally a 1964 hit for British singer Sandie Shaw, the Naked Eyes rendition, released in 1983, became a massive global success. It topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the U.S., marking a significant achievement for a British act in the American market, and also reached the top 10 in countries including the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia. This synth-driven interpretation, characterized by Byrne's emotive and clear vocal delivery, became an enduring anthem of the 1980s and a defining track of the new wave genre.
