Pentagon boasts of using AI to write reports mandated by Congress

The U.S. Department of Defense has begun using generative artificial intelligence tools to draft congressionally mandated reports, a process previously requiring hundreds of hours of staff work. Pentagon Chief Technology Officer Emil Michael announced this development on June 12 during an event hosted by the Hudson Institute in Washington, D.C., highlighting it as a significant adoption of generative AI within the department. The Pentagon has provided access to AI tools, including Google Cloud's Gemini for Government, to all six military branches via its GenAI.mil platform since December 2025. Michael stated that the AI can draft a congressional report, which typically takes 200 hours of staffing, in approximately five hours by processing relevant documents. This initiative aims to streamline the production of numerous annual reports required by Congress on national security matters.
