Pamfir Director Remortgaged Kyiv Apartment for New Film

Dmytro Sukholytkyy-Sobchuk, the director acclaimed for his 2022 film ‘Pamfir,’ has remortgaged his apartment in Kyiv to finance his new project, ‘Something Strange Happened to Me.’ This decision was driven by the pervasive fear of potential bombing raids in the Ukrainian capital following Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022. Sukholytkyy-Sobchuk expressed that the constant threat of his home being destroyed by shelling made him feel a profound sense of impermanence regarding his possessions, including his apartment.

He stated that the war, which began with Russia’s invasion and escalated into the largest and deadliest conflict in Europe since World War II, instilled a deep sense of anxiety. This existential dread, coupled with the ongoing conflict four years later, prompted him to take a significant financial risk. Despite the international success he found with ‘Pamfir,’ Sukholytkyy-Sobchuk felt compelled to invest his personal assets into his new artistic endeavor, ‘Something Strange Happened to Me,’ which he describes as a departure from his previous work and something ‘strange.’
