Palm Springs Condo Owners Rage at $100K ‘Ransom’ Demand in Tribal Land Lease Dispute

Condo owners in Palm Springs are facing a significant financial demand from a tribal landowner to extend their land leases. Residents of the Saddlerock Estates and Saddlerock Gardens developments, comprising 67 units primarily occupied by retirees, received letters last year from tribal landowner William McGlamary. McGlamary is demanding a $100,000 fee per unit to sign a lease extension through 2077, in addition to a $15,000 attorney's fee, a move approved by the Bureau of Indian Affairs. These demands are substantially higher than historical signing fees in Palm Springs, which typically range from $5,000 to $10,000. The current land leases for both developments are set to expire in spring 2042. If the extension is agreed upon, monthly lease payments are projected to increase from approximately $200 to $640, with further increases of 20% to 30% every five years, linked to inflation rates. The Saddlerock Gardens development alone consists of 43 single-level homes.
