Israel Advances E1 Settlement Plan, Palestinians Condemn

The Israeli government has advanced its controversial E1 settlement plan by issuing tenders for the construction of more than 1,200 housing units. This move, announced on March 18, 2024, involves land designated for the E1 project, which is situated between Jerusalem and the West Bank settlement of Ma'ale Adumim. Palestinian officials have strongly condemned the Israeli government's decision, characterizing it as an illegal act that further entrenches the occupation and undermines prospects for a two-state solution.

The E1 plan, first conceived in the 1990s, aims to create a large settlement bloc that would effectively sever the West Bank in two, isolating East Jerusalem from its Palestinian hinterland. The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement denouncing the tender as a "flagrant violation of international law" and a "de facto annexation" of Palestinian land. They urged the international community to take "decisive action" to hold Israel accountable for its actions and to protect the viability of a future Palestinian state.

This latest development comes amid heightened tensions in the region and follows a period of increased settlement activity by Israel.
