Palestinian children ‘unprotected’ as NGOs forced out of Gaza and West Bank

Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are scaling down operations in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank due to increasing pressure from Israel, leaving Palestinian children increasingly unprotected. This withdrawal impacts vital humanitarian aid and rights advocacy efforts. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported in early May 2024 that access restrictions imposed by Israeli authorities have significantly hampered the work of these organizations. These restrictions include lengthy bureaucratic processes, arbitrary rejections of visa applications for international staff, and the confiscation of essential equipment. The situation has led to a reduction in critical services such as healthcare, education, and psychological support for children who have endured prolonged conflict and displacement. Human Rights Watch stated in a June 2024 report that these actions constitute a deliberate attempt to stifle independent monitoring and assistance, thereby exacerbating the vulnerability of Palestinian populations. The withdrawal of these groups leaves a significant gap in the protection mechanisms for children, who are already disproportionately affected by the ongoing occupation and conflict, facing risks of injury, trauma, and lack of access to basic necessities. The international community has expressed concern over the deteriorating humanitarian situation and the shrinking space for civil society organizations operating in the region.
