One killed as Israel hits south Lebanon, issues forced displacement orders

Israel's military ordered residents of 20 Lebanese towns and villages in southern Lebanon to evacuate their homes on Tuesday, March 19, 2024, following an airstrike that killed one person. The evacuation orders were issued for areas along the border with Israel. The airstrike targeted a residential building in the town of Nabatieh, killing a woman and injuring seven others, according to Lebanese state media. This escalation follows a period of heightened cross-border shelling between Israel and Hezbollah, which has intensified since the start of the Israel-Hamas war in October 2023. The Israeli military stated that the evacuation orders were a precautionary measure to ensure civilian safety. The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has expressed concern over the escalating violence and called for restraint from all parties. The forced displacement affects an estimated 30,000 people, who are being urged to seek shelter in safer areas further north. Humanitarian organizations are preparing to provide assistance to those displaced.
