On The Border is closing stores today: Full list of doomed locations includes company-owned restaurants

On The Border Mexican Grill & Cantina is closing its company-owned locations by the end of the day on June 12, 2026, a spokesperson confirmed. The casual Tex-Mex chain filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in March 2025 and was subsequently acquired by Pappas Restaurants in May 2025. At the time of the acquisition, Pappas Restaurants assumed control of 60 U.S. locations and 20 franchised locations in South Korea. Since the acquisition, the company has been reducing its operational footprint. OTB Hospitality stated in a press release that the decision to close company-owned locations followed a thorough business review and that they are evaluating the future of the brand and exploring strategic options. The company's immediate focus is on supporting affected team members. Franchise locations in South Dakota, Florida, Nevada, California, and South Korea will remain operational. The company's website lists 33 locations nationwide, with 17 in Texas, where the chain was founded in 1982. The remaining company-owned locations are reportedly in Arkansas, Kansas, Michigan, New Jersey, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, and Texas.
