Trump Praises Xi Jinping Despite China's Global Rivalry

Former President Donald Trump, who campaigned on a platform of confronting China as an economic menace, has increasingly adopted a conciliatory tone towards Chinese President Xi Jinping. During his presidency, Trump initially characterized China as a threat that had "gutted America's factories and eroded the middle class." However, his public statements have evolved to describe Xi as "a great gentleman" with whom he "get[s] along great," emphasizing a "very good trading relationship" despite acknowledging China as a "competitor."

This shift in rhetoric has been evident across multiple policy areas. For instance, when presented with reports that China had supplied Iran with satellite imagery, Trump responded by stating, "I think he's behaved reasonably well," effectively downplaying the significance of the alleged action. Similarly, after accusing Beijing of accessing U.S. voter files in 2020, Trump expressed hesitation to retaliate, suggesting that "China is maybe a little bit different today than it was then." This magnanimity persists even as the United States and China engage in a contest for global leadership, and traditional U.S. allies reassess their strategic alignments. China's expanding influence in manufacturing and its advancements in emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and electric vehicles pose economic risks to nations including the U.S., Germany, Italy, France, South Korea, and Japan.

Despite initial attempts to confront China through tariffs, a strategy that Trump acknowledged "backfired" and failed to alter Chinese behavior, his administration resorted to diplomatic hospitality. Trump made a trip to Beijing in May, and further meetings between the leaders were anticipated within the year at international summits. Preparations for Xi's arrival included readying a helipad on the White House South Lawn, with Trump expressing regret that his ballroom would not be completed in time to host the Chinese leader. While Trump maintained that the U.S. held a comfortable lead over China, his tariff-based confrontation strategy in the preceding year did not yield the desired results.
