Older Millennials Have Less Than 20 Years To Save Enough for Retirement—and They’re Already $427K Behind

Older millennials, currently in their 40s, face a significant retirement savings deficit, with a median of $73,000 saved, according to a report by the Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies. This amount falls short of their own target of $500,000 and the expert recommendation of $1.6 million, leaving them an estimated $427,000 behind their goals. Elias Friedman, founder of Kadima Wealth, attributes this shortfall to economic challenges faced by this generation, including the Great Recession, rising housing costs, inflation, and higher interest rates during their peak earning and saving years. The immediate financial pressures of making ends meet often overshadow long-term retirement planning.
The escalating cost of housing is a primary obstacle for this demographic. Jeromee Johnson, president and CTO of Tellus, highlights that housing, traditionally a wealth-building asset, has become a significant financial burden as mortgage payments and property taxes outpace wage growth. The rising expenses associated with homeownership, such as appliance replacements and homeowners insurance, further strain budgets. Steven Rogé, CIO and CEO of R.W. Rogé & Company, notes that homeowners insurance costs have doubled the rate of inflation, particularly in disaster-prone regions.
Johnson also points out that the lack of immediate consequences for neglecting retirement contributions, unlike mortgage payments, diminishes the sense of urgency. Retirement accounts do not face repossession for missed contributions, making it easier for individuals to deprioritize them in favor of more pressing financial obligations. Despite these challenges, the report suggests that it remains possible for 40-somethings to achieve their retirement goals through dedication, persistence, and creative financial strategies, although the window of opportunity is narrowing.
