Nothing OS 5.0 Launches With Android 17 and AI Tools

London-based technology brand Nothing has officially launched Nothing OS 5.0, a significant software update that is built upon the Android 17 operating system and introduces more than 80 new features and improvements. This update focuses on refining the user interface, enhancing performance, and expanding customization options for Nothing devices. The visual design has been refreshed with a new home screen, an adaptive color system that pulls hues from user-selected wallpapers, and transparent widget accents. System-wide typography has been updated to use the Geist typeface, aiming for a cleaner and more modern aesthetic. Functional user interface changes include the introduction of split swipe gestures, allowing users to access Notifications by swiping from the left edge of the screen and Quick Settings by swiping from the right. New lock screen clock styles, named "Gooey" and "Micrographics," have also been added. A notable new feature is the cross-platform Quick Share functionality, which facilitates seamless file transfers between Nothing phones and both iPhone and Android devices through a simple QR code. Nothing OS 5.0 incorporates on-device intelligence and an overnight memory maintenance system designed to optimize background app retention, improve touch responsiveness, and manage system resources more efficiently. New home screen widgets have been introduced, including "Collector" for showcasing personal items and "Away Time" for monitoring screen-free periods. The signature Glyph Interface, a unique feature of Nothing phones that uses LED lights on the back of the device, receives a dedicated app and a timer widget, offering new ways to interact with notifications and system functions. On the artificial intelligence front, the update enhances "Essential Voice" for more accurate real-time transcriptions. It also integrates Model Context Protocol (MCP) support within the "Essential Space" feature and introduces "Essential Apps Builder." This new tool empowers users to describe, build, and deploy custom AI-powered applications directly on their smartphones, allowing for personalized AI functionalities. The Nothing OS 5.0 Open Beta program commenced rolling out today, with the Phone (3) being the first device to receive the update. The beta will subsequently expand to other eligible Nothing devices.
