Michelle Westfort, Chief Product Officer at InStride, stated that the effectiveness of corporate education and workforce development programs hinges on their design, specifically how well they align employee growth with business objectives. For instance, Medtronic has over 3,000 employees participating in its education program, which has resulted in more than $13 million in retention savings. Westfort highlighted that successful programs are often characterized by straightforward enrollment processes, contrasting with those that require HR approval or include deterrent clawback provisions. Data from InStride indicates that 62% of top-performing programs do not require HR approval for enrollment.

Westfort elaborated on the variance in outcomes among corporate education programs, attributing it to program design. She cited SSM Health, where employees in critical clinical roles participating in their education program demonstrated 100% retention. This success, she noted, is not accidental but a result of intentional design. Conversely, programs with complex enrollment procedures or punitive measures can discourage employees, particularly those who would benefit most. The challenges faced by working adults, including full-time jobs, commutes, family responsibilities, and unpredictable schedules, necessitate that educational program access be simple and clear.

Westfort's insights were shared in an interview with the Exceptional Women Alliance (EWA), a nonprofit organization focused on peer-to-peer mentoring for high-level women.
