Nigeria Orders 80% Junior Soldier Salary Hike

Nigeria's President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ordered an 80% salary increase for junior soldiers on May 15, 2024, a move intended to bolster morale and address the nation's escalating security crises. This significant pay raise aims to improve the living conditions of soldiers in the lower ranks, who are on the front lines of combating various internal security threats across the country. The announcement was made by the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, following a meeting with the President and service chiefs.

The Nigerian military is currently engaged in a multi-faceted struggle against numerous security challenges. These include the persistent Boko Haram insurgency in the Northeast, widespread banditry and kidnapping in the Northwest and North Central regions, secessionist agitations in the Southeast, and oil bunkering and militancy in the Niger Delta.
