P.K. Subban Stars In & Produces Animated Series ‘Screech Owls’

NHL All-Star P.K. Subban is set to executive produce and voice a lead role in the upcoming animated ice hockey series titled ‘Screech Owls’. The series is slated for a fall 2027 premiere in English on CBC, followed by a winter 2028 debut in French on Radio-Canada and TFO (Télévision française de l’Ontario). This co-production marks Subban's foray into animation and production, leveraging his experience as a former professional ice hockey player.

‘Screech Owls’ is based on the popular book series of the same name by Canadian author Roy MacGregor. The books, first published in 1994, follow the adventures of a young ice hockey team. The animated adaptation aims to capture the spirit of these stories, bringing them to a new generation of viewers through visual storytelling. The series will explore themes of teamwork, perseverance, and the challenges faced by young athletes, set against the backdrop of Canadian ice hockey culture. Subban's involvement is expected to lend authenticity and appeal to the hockey-centric narrative.

The production is a significant collaboration between multiple Canadian broadcasters, highlighting a commitment to Canadian content and talent. CBC is Canada's national public broadcaster, offering a wide range of programming across television, radio, and digital platforms. Radio-Canada is the French-language public broadcaster, serving a similar role for Francophone audiences. TFO is a public educational media organization in Ontario, dedicated to providing French-language programming. The involvement of these three entities underscores the broad reach and anticipated impact of ‘Screech Owls’ within Canada.

Subban, a former defenseman who played 13 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL), is known for his dynamic playing style and his philanthropic work. His transition to producing and starring in an animated series suggests a broader career interest beyond his athletic achievements. The series is anticipated to blend action and adventure with the relatable experiences of youth sports, aiming for a family-friendly audience. The specific details of Subban's character and the plot of the first season are yet to be fully revealed, but the announcement has generated considerable interest within the sports and entertainment industries.
