Global Food Systems Lagging on Sustainability Goals

New research indicates that global efforts to establish sustainable and resilient food systems are not progressing quickly enough to meet internationally agreed-upon deadlines, particularly the 2030 target for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The report, a collaboration led by the Food Systems Countdown Initiative and published in Nature Food, assesses progress across approximately 50 metrics at both global and regional levels. These metrics encompass critical factors such as the affordability of healthy diets, the availability of fruits and vegetables, agricultural productivity, and greenhouse gas emissions originating from food production.

The findings suggest that for a majority of the SDGs, including those established by United Nations member countries a decade ago to eliminate hunger and poverty, achieving the 2030 deadline is now virtually impossible. The study also considers the net-zero emissions goals outlined in the Paris Agreement, finding that progress toward these is similarly insufficient within the food sector. The interactive dashboard launched alongside the report provides a detailed view of each country's advancement, or lack thereof, across these diverse indicators.

Particular concern is raised regarding environmental and climate-related metrics within the food systems. The report's authors analyzed trends in greenhouse gas emissions from agri-food systems, calculating gross emissions as a percentage of each country's average historical emissions. The global trend shows an undesirable increase in these emissions. Agri-food systems are a significant contributor to global warming, accounting for approximately one-third of all man-made greenhouse gas emissions, according to the U.N. Food and Agricultural Organization. To achieve net-zero emissions targets, substantial reductions in these agricultural emissions are imperative, yet current trajectories indicate the opposite.

The Food Systems Countdown Initiative's work builds upon prior studies, but this latest report distinguishes itself by providing a more granular, regional analysis. This detailed breakdown highlights the varying degrees of success and failure across different parts of the world, underscoring the complex and multifaceted nature of food system challenges. The report emphasizes that without a significant acceleration of efforts and policy interventions, the world is on track to miss critical sustainability targets related to food security, nutrition, and environmental impact by the end of this decade.
