Netanyahu Rejects Hamas Disarmament Plan

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected a 15-point proposal aimed at disarming Hamas, a move that hardens Israel's stance on the conflict in Gaza. Netanyahu stated during his weekly cabinet meeting on Sunday, according to an official translation, that "Israel does not accept the 15-point document." He further elaborated that "The IDF will not carry out any withdrawal until Hamas is genuinely disarmed, and it will continue to thwart threats against our forces and citizens." This rejection comes in response to the "roadmap" published on July 30 by the Board of Peace, an international consortium established to implement former US President Donald Trump's post-war strategy for the Gaza Strip. Trump had previously praised the roadmap, calling it an "historic agreement" and "a major milestone." The US Embassy in Jerusalem had not immediately commented on Netanyahu's statement. Hamas has offered only conditional acceptance of the roadmap, indicating a willingness to transfer heavy weapons to a newly proposed Gaza administration. However, this is contingent upon Israeli withdrawals and the establishment of a Palestinian state. The roadmap itself suggests that this new administration would be empowered to allow individual Palestinians to retain their personal firearms. Trump's original initiative envisioned a complete withdrawal of Israeli troops and tanks from the Gaza Strip, alongside discussions regarding eventual statehood. These outcomes were presented as the ultimate results of a comprehensive demilitarization and stabilization of the territory following Hamas's removal. The initial phase of this plan, a ceasefire, was agreed upon in October of the previous year. Diplomatic progress has been minimal since then, as the Israeli military has advanced beyond armistice lines into shrinking Hamas-controlled areas where approximately 2 million Palestinians are currently residing. Israel initiated its military campaign in response to the October 2023 invasion by Hamas, which caught Netanyahu's government by surprise. The conflict has had devastating consequences for the civilian population in Gaza, leading to widespread displacement and a severe humanitarian crisis. The Board of Peace, responsible for the roadmap, is an international consortium tasked with developing and implementing a long-term strategy for Gaza's governance and security.
