China Recalls 3 Million Teslas Over Door Handle Defect

Tesla is initiating a recall of approximately 2.99 million vehicles in China, a measure prompted by a potential defect in the door handle system. This issue, identified by the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) in China, could lead to the automatic doors failing to open. The recall specifically addresses vehicles manufactured between January 1, 2014, and December 31, 2020. The problem stems from the electronic control unit (ECU) of the door handles, which, when exposed to cold temperatures, may malfunction. This malfunction can cause the door handles to fail to retract, thereby preventing the doors from opening from the outside. In some instances, the internal door release mechanism may also be affected, hindering the ability to open the doors from the inside.

Tesla has stated that it will provide a free software update to address the issue. This update aims to mitigate the risk of the door handle ECU failing in cold weather conditions. For vehicles where the software update is insufficient, Tesla will also offer a free repair service, which involves replacing the affected door handle components. The company has committed to notifying owners of the affected vehicles and arranging for the necessary service. The recall is scheduled to commence on March 20, 2024.
