Nationwide Recall Expands to 3.6 Million Grill Brushes Over Swallowed Metal Bristle Hazard

Household goods manufacturer Conair has significantly expanded its recall of Cuisinart brand metal wire bristle grill brushes, now encompassing over 3.6 million units nationwide. This expanded recall addresses a critical safety concern where small metal wire bristles can detach from the brushes during use, potentially embedding themselves in food cooked on barbecue grills. The initial recall, announced in July by Conair, a prominent player in the consumer products market known for brands like Cuisinart and Waring, covered approximately 1.7 million brushes. The subsequent expansion, detailed on the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) website – an independent federal agency tasked with protecting the public from unreasonable risks of injury or death associated with consumer products – adds more than 1.9 million additional brush models to the list of affected items.

The core of the safety issue, as highlighted in the CPSC recall notice, is the risk that these dislodged bristles can "stick to the grill or food, posing an ingestion hazard and risk of serious internal injuries that could require surgery." Conair is strongly advising consumers to cease using the recalled brushes immediately to prevent potential harm. The company has documented at least 54 incidents where wire bristles detached from the brushes. Alarmingly, three of these reported incidents involved individuals who ingested the detached bristles and subsequently required medical intervention for their removal from the throat or digestive tract, underscoring the severity of the hazard.

The recalled Cuisinart grill brushes, designed to effectively scrub BBQ grill grates and remove stubborn grease and baked-on food residue, were distributed widely across the United States. They were available for purchase through a broad spectrum of online retailers and physical stores for an extended period, spanning nearly 17 years, from June 2009 through March 2026. Prominent retailers that carried these affected products include major e-commerce giant Amazon and popular department store chain Burlington, among others. The expansion of this recall signifies that a more extensive range of Cuisinart grill brush models than initially identified are susceptible to this bristle detachment issue, emphasizing the widespread nature of the potential safety threat. Consumers are urged to consult the CPSC website for a definitive list of the specific model numbers included in the recall and to immediately discontinue the use of any brushes matching the recalled specifications. This comprehensive recall effort aims to mitigate further injuries associated with the ingestion of metal bristles, which can lead to severe internal complications and necessitate surgical procedures.
