NASA Considers Sending Mars Rover Model to Moon

NASA officials are seriously considering sending the full-scale engineering model of the Perseverance rover to the Moon. This car-sized rover, nicknamed "Promise," is currently housed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California and serves as a testbed for the Mars Perseverance rover. The potential deployment aims to expedite NASA's efforts to explore the lunar south pole region.

If approved, "Promise" would be equipped with a multi-mission radioisotope thermoelectric generator (MMRTG). This nuclear power source would enable the rover to operate across difficult terrain and through the extended lunar night, a significant advantage over solar-powered rovers which are more common in NASA's current fleet. The rover was not otherwise planned for a launch, making it a candidate for this lunar mission.

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman stated on Tuesday during a monthly update on the agency's Moon base plans that "We are thinking very hard right now about sending Promise to the Moon." This consideration highlights NASA's innovative approach to lunar exploration and its strategy for establishing a sustained presence on the Moon.
