MNEK Releases New Album 'Bulldozer', Embraces Queer Joy

Uzoechi Osisioma Emenike, known professionally as MNEK, is releasing his second album, 'Bulldozer', which prominently features queer joy. The 31-year-old south Londoner discussed the album and his career in a recent interview, highlighting his past successes and ongoing personal growth. MNEK has previously written hit songs for artists like Beyoncé and has been nominated for two Grammy Awards, demonstrating significant talent in songwriting and production. Despite these achievements, MNEK expressed that individual success has been more elusive for him compared to his collaborative work.

The album's third single, 'Muscle Marys..', is indicative of the themes explored in 'Bulldozer'. The music video for 'Muscle Marys..' was filmed in a south-east London warehouse and features a deliberately "very gay" aesthetic, as described by MNEK himself. The set included suggestive interactions and scenes such as dancers being hosed down in a shower, underscoring the album's focus on celebrating queer experiences and identity. MNEK stated that he is now ready to enjoy his own success and artistic expression.

He articulated this struggle by saying, "I’m a fat Black gay man. Try selling that."
