Meta Ordered to Pay $567 Million in New Mexico Child Safety Case

Meta Platforms has been ordered to pay an additional $567 million in the second phase of New Mexico's child safety lawsuit, bringing the total penalties to nearly $1 billion. The ruling, published on Thursday by the Santa Fe district court, found Meta's social media platforms to be a "significant contributing cause" of harm to minors, labeling them a "public nuisance." This judgment follows an initial ruling in June, where Meta was ordered to pay $400 million to the state for similar violations.

The state argued that Meta's algorithms and design choices amplified harmful content, contributing to increased rates of teen mental health issues, addiction, and exposure to exploitation.
