AfD's Ulrich Siegmund Leads Party to Strong Regional Election Showing

Ulrich Siegmund, a 35-year-old politician, has emerged as a key figure for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, presenting a charismatic and approachable image that has contributed to the party's strongest electoral performance to date. The AfD achieved a resounding victory in the regional election held in the eastern German state of Saxony-Anhalt on Sunday, although it narrowly missed securing an outright majority, which would have paved the way for the formation of the first far-right state government in Germany since World War II. Siegmund's campaign strategy prominently featured his image on posters across Saxony-Anhalt, under the slogan "everything is possible." At campaign rallies, he attracted large crowds, with supporters often queuing for selfies and brief interactions, some wearing T-shirts emblazoned with his likeness. Despite the AfD's known stances on issues such as pro-Russian policies, anti-immigration sentiment, and other radical positions, Siegmund has deliberately avoided making extreme public statements. Instead, he cultivates an image as a "man of the people," a tactic that appeals to voters who might otherwise be deterred by the party's more radical elements. However, Siegmund maintains a firm stance on the party's core principles, stating unequivocally after the election that the AfD would not "throw our positions overboard for coalitions." Siegmund's background includes a degree in business management and a prior career selling air fresheners. He is not new to politics, having briefly been a member of the center-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU) during his youth before joining the AfD. He has served as a lawmaker in the state legislature in Magdeburg for the past ten years and has co-led the AfD's parliamentary group in the state since 2022. His political profile was further boosted by his vocal criticism of COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, which garnered him a significant following on social media. Beyond his image as a youthful and energetic politician, Siegmund frequently invokes a sense of nostalgia. During his campaign, he articulated that voters desire "the old, safe Germany back." Born on October 25, 1990, shortly after German reunification, Siegmund has also tapped into the lingering sentiment of nostalgia for life in communist East Germany among certain segments of the electorate. This was exemplified by campaign events that included rides on Simson mopeds, a popular mode of transport in East Germany.
