MB&F M.A.D.Editions Launches M.A.D.3 With Vincent Calabrese

MB&F's accessible imprint, M.A.D.Editions, has launched its third significant project, the M.A.D.3 Vincent Calabrese. This timepiece is the result of a collaboration between MB&F founder Maximilian Büsser and the 82-year-old independent watchmaker Vincent Calabrese, who is a co-founder of the Académie Horlogère des Créateurs Indépendants (AHCI) and the creator of Corum's iconic Golden Bridge watch. The M.A.D.3 reinterprets Calabrese's signature "Baladin" complication, moving away from the abrupt hour changes of traditional jumping hour mechanisms. Instead, it features a fluid, slow-wandering hour indicator that progresses steadily across the dial, accompanied by trailing minutes. This innovative display offers a continuous and smooth transition of time. The development of the M.A.D.3 involved a significant re-engineering of Calabrese's artisanal complication to enable reliable, larger-scale production. MB&F's technical team redesigned the wandering hours module from the ground up to meet these requirements. The watch is powered by a specially optimized La Joux-Perret G111 calibre, which has been reworked to manage the energy demands of the complex wandering hours module. This ensures the preservation of Calabrese's characteristic fluid time transitions while enhancing reliability and production capacity. The case of the M.A.D.3 is crafted from 316L stainless steel and measures 40mm in diameter with a thickness of 12.7mm. It was designed by Eric Giroud and features a distinctive aesthetic with floating lugs, double-domed sapphire crystals, and a bombé sapphire minute ring. Integrated Super-LumiNova enhances legibility. The case back is openworked, revealing the winding rotor, which is discreetly engraved with a personal quote from Calabrese. The M.A.D.3 is available in two distinct editions: the "Tribe/Friends" edition, presented in a raspberry pink hue, and a "raffle" edition in blue. The collaboration signifies M.A.D.Editions' role as a platform for bringing the work of legendary creators to a contemporary audience, akin to a publishing house for horological artistry. Vincent Calabrese's original "Baladin" complication, first introduced in 1970, was a groundbreaking concept that aimed to represent time's continuous flow rather than discrete units. The M.A.D.3 represents a modern interpretation of this philosophy, made accessible through MB&F's technical expertise and production capabilities.
