Mahmoud Khalil Sues Trump Officials Over Alleged Conspiracy

Mahmoud Khalil filed a lawsuit on March 15, 2024, alleging a conspiracy between former Trump administration officials and private groups to target him due to his pro-Palestine advocacy. The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida, names former acting Director of National Intelligence Richard Grenell and former acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker as defendants, alongside private entities such as the Canary Mission and the Zionist Organization of America. Khalil claims these parties engaged in a coordinated effort to surveil, harass, and defame him, leading to professional and personal repercussions.

The complaint details a pattern of alleged actions, including the creation and dissemination of a "dossier" by Canary Mission that Khalil asserts contained false and misleading information. This dossier, according to the lawsuit, was then allegedly used by the named government officials and other private actors to influence immigration policies and employment opportunities for Khalil. The suit further alleges that this campaign aimed to suppress his free speech and advocacy related to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Khalil is seeking damages for alleged violations of his civil rights, including claims of defamation, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and conspiracy. The lawsuit cites specific instances where he believes his professional life was negatively impacted, such as being denied entry into the United States and facing difficulties in securing academic positions. The legal filing asserts that the defendants acted with malice and in concert to achieve their objective of silencing his activism.

Richard Grenell and Matthew Whitaker have not yet formally responded to the lawsuit. The Canary Mission and the Zionist Organization of America have previously stated that their activities are aimed at exposing individuals and groups they deem to be anti-Israel or anti-Semitic. This legal action represents a significant challenge to the methods employed by these organizations and their alleged collaborators in targeting activists.
