Lutkenhaus, 17, upsets Olympic champion Wanyonyi in Oslo

Cooper Lutkenhaus, a 17-year-old American athlete, defeated Olympic champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi in the men's 800m race at the Diamond League meeting in Oslo on May 30, 2024. Lutkenhaus crossed the finish line with a personal best time of 1:44.94, securing a significant upset victory over the Kenyan favorite. Wanyonyi, who won gold at the Tokyo Olympics, finished second in 1:45.10. In the men's 200m, fellow teenager Gout Gout of Australia faced a challenging race, finishing seventh with a time of 20.87 seconds. The Oslo Diamond League event also featured other notable performances, including a world-leading time in the women's 3000m steeplechase by Beatrice Chepkoech.
