Luigi Mangione will assert psychiatric defense in murder case in UnitedHealthcare CEO’s killing

Luigi Mangione intends to present a psychiatric defense during his state murder trial, asserting he experienced extreme emotional disturbance at the time he fatally shot UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, a judge stated on Wednesday. This defense strategy, if successful, could lead to a conviction for manslaughter rather than murder. Manslaughter carries a maximum sentence of 25 years imprisonment, whereas a murder conviction could result in a life sentence. Mangione is also facing federal charges, where an emotional disturbance defense is not applicable, and he could also receive a life sentence in that case. The judge presiding over the state trial indicated that Mangione's legal team plans to file a notice of intent to present this defense. The prosecution has requested additional time to review the psychiatric evaluations and evidence submitted by the defense. The murder occurred on December 10, 2023, and Thompson was found deceased in his vehicle. Mangione was apprehended days later in Florida.
