Lowe's, GM, Nvidia Launch Coalition for Skilled Trades Workforce

The Lowe’s Foundation, in partnership with General Motors (GM) and Nvidia, has launched the Building Futures Skilled Trades Coalition, an initiative involving over 75 organizations aimed at addressing a critical national shortage of skilled tradespeople. This coalition seeks to invest in and enhance the country's workforce of skilled laborers, a sector facing significant challenges. The urgency of this issue is underscored by data from the U.S. Department of Education, which indicates that for every five skilled trades professionals retiring, only two new workers enter the field. Rebecca Henninger, a career coach and founder of The Job Girl, highlighted a historical perception problem where four-year college degrees were prioritized over vocational education and trades, contributing to the current labor deficit. This perception issue has coincided with a large segment of the skilled trades workforce reaching retirement age. To counteract this dire situation, Lowe's has convened a consortium of businesses and organizations pooling resources to rebuild this essential workforce. The Building Futures Skilled Trades Coalition has set an ambitious goal to train 1 million skilled trades professionals by the year 2035.
