LG Monitors Install McAfee Ads on Windows PCs

LG's new UltraGear monitors are installing McAfee pop-up advertisements on Windows 11 PCs without user consent. A video from Gamers Nexus detailed how, upon connecting a new LG UltraGear monitor to a Windows 11 computer, the system automatically installs LG driver updates and the LG Monitor App Installer through Windows Update. This process occurs silently, without any permission pop-ups or notifications presented to the user.

The LG Monitor App Installer, once installed, appears to be the conduit for the McAfee advertisements. While the app itself does not seem to offer special monitor control features, its installation triggers the unwanted ad pop-ups. This behavior has drawn criticism for its intrusive nature and lack of transparency, as users are not given an option to opt out of the software or its associated advertising during the initial setup or through subsequent system updates.

Gamers Nexus highlighted that the driver installation and the subsequent app installation are bundled together, making it difficult for users to prevent the McAfee software from being added to their system. The report suggests that the integration of third-party advertising software through essential driver updates represents a significant privacy concern for consumers.
