Queer," aims to replicate its success in new markets, drawing inspiration from the aesthetic of 1990s street zines and the digital presence of outlets like Vice. Currently headquartered in Phoenix, LOOKOUT produces a quarterly print magazine, distributes approximately three distinct email newsletters weekly to over 14,000 subscribers, and consistently publishes news, investigative pieces, and accountability journalism on its website. Its editorial style blends the informal, engaging tone of alternative weeklies, exemplified by headlines like "Join Our Drunken Live Blog of the Republican Governor’s Primary Debate," with rigorous and sharp reporting. The newsroom comprises a core staff of four full-time employees, supplemented by a network of freelance contributors, interns, and fellows. At the recent Association of Alternative Newsmedia convention held in Palm Springs, LOOKOUT garnered four awards, including a commendation for excellence in journalism, underscoring its journalistic quality. The publication maintains a commitment to accessibility, operating without a paywall. Beyond its digital and print offerings, LOOKOUT actively engages its community by hosting over three dozen in-person events annually across Arizona. Recent coverage highlights include detailed reports on a state liquor board's eight-hour debate concerning queer culture, an attempt by an heir to the U-Haul business to prevent the opening of a gay leather bar, and an examination of the "history of incendiary conduct" associated with Arizona's leader of the Stonewall Democrats. Joseph Darius Jaafari, the 38-year-old Iranian journalist and founding editor, described his approach as that of a "rabble-rouser" who "likes to poke, I like to prod, I like to be a bit of a jackass to The Man." His prior journalistic experience includes work for publications such as Rolling Stone and The Marshall Project. The expansion initiative is also supported by external interest, with the Chicago-based Joyce Foundation having funded a landscape study to assess the potential need for a similar publication in the Great Lakes region, indicating broader recognition of LOOKOUT's model and impact.
