Leica Revives Rare 1960s US Navy Spy Lens as Limited Edition Summicron-M 66 f/2

Leica has unveiled the Summicron-M 66 f/2, a new addition to its esteemed Classic Line, which serves as a contemporary reinterpretation of an exceptionally rare and historically significant piece of military optical equipment. This new lens is a revival of the Elcan 66 mm f/2, originally developed in the late 1960s by the renowned optical engineer Dr. Walter Mandler. Mandler, a pivotal figure in lens design, created this optic for the United States Navy, specifically for covert reconnaissance missions. The Elcan lens was engineered to deliver unparalleled resolution and detail capture in a discreet and compact form factor, a critical requirement for its intended military application. Its design achieved a delicate balance between fine contrast rendition, a compact physical size, and an unconventional 66 mm focal length, a departure from more standard focal lengths of the era. Due to its specialized nature and limited production, only approximately 200 units of the original military specification Elcan 66 mm f/2 were ever manufactured, making it an exceptionally scarce artifact in the world of optics.

The new Leica Summicron-M 66 f/2 aims to bring the unique optical performance and distinct focal length of this storied heritage lens to the public for the first time. Embracing the ethos of the original design, the Summicron-M 66 f/2 retains the exact 66 mm focal length and the optical principles that defined its predecessor. As is characteristic of lenses within Leica's Classic Line, the Summicron-M 66 f/2 boasts a maximum aperture of f/2. This wide aperture is celebrated for producing a distinctive rendering style, marked by high contrast and a pleasingly soft bokeh, which adds a unique aesthetic quality to images. Conversely, when the aperture is stopped down, the lens is capable of achieving the maximum resolution that was originally a paramount requirement for naval intelligence, allowing for the capture of incredibly minute details.

This exclusive re-release is strictly limited to 660 units worldwide, underscoring its collectible status. Each lens will be individually marked with a special serial number and feature precise focal length engraving. Measuring approximately 60 mm in length and weighing 456 grams, the Summicron-M 66 f/2 is designed to integrate seamlessly with Leica's M-mount camera system. It utilizes the robust Leica M bayonet mount, enhanced with 6-bit encoding for digital communication with compatible modern Leica cameras, ensuring optimal performance and metadata recording. The lens also incorporates an E49 filter thread, facilitating the use of various photographic filters and accessories. The Summicron-M 66 f/2 is available globally through Leica's official channels starting today. Further emphasizing its significance and collectible appeal, the very first unit produced, bearing the serial number #001, is slated for auction at the prestigious Leitz Photographica Auction in November 2026, offering collectors a unique opportunity to acquire a piece of photographic and military history.
