Lee Byung-hun and Hwang Dong-hyuk Reunite for Sci-Fi Thriller

Actor Lee Byung-hun is set to reunite with "Squid Game" creator Hwang Dong-hyuk for the upcoming sci-fi thriller film titled "K.O. Club." This project marks Hwang's return to feature filmmaking after an absence of nearly ten years. The film's production company, Firstman Studio, which Hwang co-runs with producer Kim Ji-yeon, confirmed Lee Byung-hun's casting and indicated that filming is slated to commence in the first half of 2027. Lee Byung-hun previously collaborated with Hwang Dong-hyuk on the globally acclaimed Netflix series "Squid Game," where he portrayed the character of the Front Man. He is not the only "Squid Game" alumnus joining the "K.O. Club" cast; Park Hae-soo, who also appeared in the series, will be part of the ensemble. The film will also feature three actors new to Hwang's directorial projects: Oh Jung-se, known for "It's Okay to Not Be Okay"; Cho Yeo-jeong, recognized for her role in "Parasite"; and Kim So-jin, who starred in "The Man Standing Next." The narrative of "K.O. Club" shifts from the dystopian survival games of "Squid Game" to a near-future setting, yet it retains Hwang's characteristic exploration of class conflict. The plot centers on a generational war in a near-future society where biological youth can be purchased with wealth. An aging elite class is depicted as hoarding money and power, while a younger generation is excluded from these privileges. The film's title, "K.O. Club," is an abbreviation for "Killing Oldmen Club," directly referencing the central theme of intergenerational conflict. Firstman Studio, the production company behind "K.O. Club," previously played a significant role in bringing "Squid Game" to international audiences. The company has since expanded into television production with the series "Affairs Not the Only Secret." "K.O. Club" signifies Firstman Studio's re-entry into feature film production, developed in close collaboration with its founder, Hwang Dong-hyuk. For Hwang, this film represents a significant milestone following a period of immense global recognition driven by the success of "Squid Game," which achieved widespread popularity across three seasons on Netflix and became one of the platform's most successful series.
