The announcement was delivered to the Lakers' front office via James' longtime agent and Klutch Sports CEO, Rich Paul. This decision marks the end of an eight-year tenure with the Lakers, during which James led the team to its 17th NBA Championship in 2020 and broke the league's all-time career scoring record. Despite facing physical challenges last season, including sciatica affecting his lower back, James maintained a high level of performance, averaging 20.9 points, 7.2 assists, and 6.1 rebounds across 60 games. He further elevated his play in the postseason, averaging 23.2 points per game to help the Lakers advance past the Houston Rockets in the first round.

According to ESPN's Senior NBA Insider Shams Charania, who broke the news, James' departure is characterized as a "happiness-led decision" rather than a financial one.
